This culminated in a formal rule introduced in March 2024, which required:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reporting of <strong>Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions<\/strong> (if material)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disclosure of <strong>climate-related risks<\/strong> and their business impact<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Information on <strong>governance and oversight<\/strong> of climate strategies and goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While the rule stopped short of including Scope 3 emissions (those across the value chain), it marked a leap toward alignment with frameworks like the TCFD and the EU\u2019s CSRD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the political and legal climate changed just as quickly as the Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_the_SEC_Stepped_Back\"><\/span><strong>Why the SEC Stepped Back<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Legal pressure and political change played key roles.
