Forced labour and modern forms of slavery are not isolated cases, as the number of people subjected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/topics\/forced-labour\/lang--en\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">modern slavery is around 40.3 million, including 24.9 million forced laborers<\/a>. Moreover, this is not exclusive to adults, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/topics\/forced-labour\/lang--en\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 in 4 victims of modern slavery are minors<\/a> and nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/protection\/child-labour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 in 10 children in the world are subjected to forced labor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact that organised crime and corruption perpetuate these human rights violations is due to the failure of governments to protect people in this situation. These criteria may include deprivation of liberty; withholding of wages or identification documents; violence; threats or fraudulent debts. In addition to being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk\/stories\/modern-slavery-transatlantic-slavery-whats-difference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a serious <strong>human rights<\/strong> violation<\/a>, forced labour is a criminal offence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Forced_labor_today\"><\/span>Forced labor today<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 40.3 million people subjected to any modern form of slavery, nearly <strong>25 million are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/topics\/forced-labour\/definition\/lang--en\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exploited in forced labor<\/a><\/strong>. Of these, nearly 16 million work in the private sector. This work is mainly distributed among domestic service, agriculture and construction. Fifty-eight percent of these people are women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 5 million are involved in<strong> forced sexual exploitation<\/strong>. Here, the inequality is even more pronounced, since 99 % are women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data on forced labour is complemented by the<strong> institutional violence<\/strong> that certain countries still exercise through their corresponding legislation. Four million people are condemned to forced labour in countries where this practice is still in force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Modern_forms_of_slavery_today\"><\/span>Modern forms of slavery today<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the 40.3 million exploited people are divided by gender, 29 million, or 71%, are girls or women. In the words of Walk Free, <strong>one in 130 women or girls<\/strong> are victims of modern slavery. Add to that figure 15.8 million forced into forced marriages. Cross-referenced with Unicef figures, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.es\/noticia\/matrimonio-infantil-12-millones-de-ninas-se-casan-cada-ano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>12 million child marriages take place every year<\/strong><\/a>. Gender <strong>inequality <\/strong>undoubtedly affects the prevalence of modern slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Child_slavery\"><\/span>Child slavery<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The main causes that make children vulnerable are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/laborcenter.uiowa.edu\/special-projects\/child-labor-public-education-project\/about-child-labor\/what-child-labor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poverty<\/a><\/strong>, discrimination and the absence of social policies. In addition to this is the impossibility of access to a quality education system and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/ethics\/slavery\/modern\/persistence.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">economic interests<\/a><\/strong> of certain States, multinationals or other groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethechildren.org\/us\/what-we-do\/protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Save the Children<\/a>, <strong>85 million children <\/strong>suffer some kind of exploitation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Child trafficking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sexual exploitation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forced labor due to indebtedness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theworldcounts.com\/challenges\/people-and-poverty\/child-labor\/child-slavery-facts\/story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mining and agriculture<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Domestic slavery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Child marriage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Child soldiers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_eliminate_modern_forms_of_slavery\"><\/span>How to eliminate modern forms of slavery<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The international community is trying to <strong>eliminate modern forms of slavery<\/strong> with declarations, which are expected to become active policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"UN_Agenda_2030_for_Sustainable_Development\"><\/span>UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sustainable economic development<\/strong> is only possible with the eradication of poverty in any of its manifestations and throughout the planet. To this end, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theworldcounts.com\/challenges\/people-and-poverty\/child-labor\/child-slavery-facts\/story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elimination of child labor by 2025<\/a>, as well as all types of modern slavery, is set as a goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_European_Commissions_Due_Diligence_Directive_2022\"><\/span>The European Commission&#8217;s Due Diligence Directive (2022)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/business-economy-euro\/doing-business-eu\/corporate-sustainability-due-diligence_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">directive<\/a>, long awaited by <strong>human rights associations<\/strong>, homogenises the domestic legislation of some European countries. Some of them are ahead of the directive. This is the case in the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim is to oblige companies to <strong>report on respect for human rights <\/strong>throughout their value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ILOs_Forced_Labor_Protocol\"><\/span>ILO&#8217;s Forced Labor Protocol<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, <a href=\"https:\/\/50forfreedom.org\/?noredirect=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>59 countries have ratified it<\/strong><\/a>. The ILO is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/50forfreedom.org\/blog\/stories\/mtuc-trade-unions-role\/?noredirect=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">giving the unions a leading role<\/a> <\/strong>in putting an end to labor exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Modern_Slavery_Act\"><\/span>Modern Slavery Act<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the most far-reaching standards against modern slavery. It <strong>affects all companies with a turnover of more than \u00a336 million<\/strong> and their supply chains. It does not matter whether they operate exclusively in the UK or only in part of the UK. It does not include penalties, but it does <strong>affect brand reputation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Legislation, such as the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecovadis.com\/glossary\/uk-modern-slavery-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Modern Slavery Act<\/a><\/strong>, and the involvement of institutional representatives, such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UN_HRC\/status\/1507368044800135171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fernando Villegas<\/a><\/strong>, are leading the way. In March, he raised his voice to involve civil society in the eradication of this scourge.
