To respond to this challenge, member states have launched the so-called <strong>Green Deal<\/strong> <strong>European<\/strong>. This historic agreement proposes a total transformation of the economy with one objective: <strong>stop global warming. <\/strong>With this approach, Europe will become the <strong>first climate-neutral continent<\/strong>. This means that, by 2050, the member countries must have reached the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/aplanet.org\/resources\/what-is-net-zero-and-how-to-achieve-it-strategies-to-reach-net-zero-emissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Net Zero<\/strong><\/a>. At that point, the emissions are neutralised: as much pollution is removed from the atmosphere as is emitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"ez-toc-container\" class=\"ez-toc-v2_0_82_1 counter-hierarchy In this international agreement of 2015, the signatory countries promised to halt the increase in <strong>global temperature<\/strong>. The idea is to keep this increase below 2\u00baC with respect to the average of the pre-industrial era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a vital that we reach a goal that still seems distant: <a href=\"https:\/\/aplanet.org\/resources\/what-is-net-zero-and-how-to-achieve-it-strategies-to-reach-net-zero-emissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>climate neutrality<\/strong><\/a>. On that day, the president of the Commission, Ursula von right Leyen made it clear: \u00abEmitting CO\u2082 must have a price.\u00bb With that sentence, she wanted to show the determination of the EU in implementing this programme. And she sought to mark a main and irrefutable objective: Europe must <strong>be neutral in emissions in 2050<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Green_Deal_within_the_EU\"><\/span>The <em>Green Deal <\/em>within the EU<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, the main objective of this <strong>green pact <\/strong>would be to <a href=\"https:\/\/aplanet.org\/resources\/5-ways-in-which-your-company-can-take-climate-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">curb climate change <\/a>and achieve <strong>climate neutrality by 2050. <\/strong>In addition, other major goals appear to be associated with this challenge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Protect human life, <\/strong>animals and plants through the reduction of pollution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Help companies lead the transition <\/strong>to a model based on clean products and technologies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guarantee <strong>a fair and inclusive transition <\/strong>towards this new horizon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Green_Deal_outside_the_EU\"><\/span>The Green Deal<em> <\/em>outside the EU<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The action of the EU crosses its borders: it pays 40 percent of the global fight against warming. And he wants to continue leading that battle. To do this, it is proposed to lead by example through this <strong>European Green Pact <\/strong>. The Union seeks <strong>to engage non-member countries <\/strong>in its vision of a more sustainable future. It is hoped that it will serve as an incentive for other nations to establish carbon pricing policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that effort, the EU <strong>will drive climate action through <\/strong>diplomacy, trade and cooperation. Moreover, standards for <a href=\"https:\/\/aplanet.org\/resources\/the-importance-of-a-sustainable-supply-chain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainable growth will be established in all global value chains <\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This outside activity will have strengths. One of them will be a <strong>Green Agenda <\/strong>for the Balkan countries. Another, the creation of environmental and climate partnerships with the Southern Neighbourhood and the Eastern Partnership. Alliances will also be built with partner countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific. Additionally, collaborations will be established with the G20 and with African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_the_European_Green_Deal_can_stop_climate_change\"><\/span>How the European Green Deal can stop climate change<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these policies and strategies have the common goal of <strong>slowing or halting the rise in global temperature<\/strong>. Although the goal is very complicated, the <em>green deal <\/em>can be the tool to achieve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the one hand, because it involves a profound transformation of the economy, forms of production and transport. On the other, because it proposes to build a <strong>new society <\/strong>, more aware of the problems that afflict it, more resilient and supportive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a more technical perspective, the <strong>European Green Deal <\/strong>is an offensive against carbon emissions. <strong>Decarbonisation is <\/strong>the main weapon against global warming, so policies that go in this direction are positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Objective_55_and_climate_change\"><\/span>Objective 55 and climate change<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To establish these <strong>decarbonisation <\/strong>policies, the EU proposes a broad legislative package &#8211; the so-called <strong>\u00abObjective 55\u00bb<\/strong>.<strong> <\/strong>It is a set of <strong>new regulations <\/strong>that will affect many sectors and that will be binding on all member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These legal changes seek to adapt the broad set of Union rules to climate change objectives. This shield acts on four fronts that make up the <strong>Biodiversity Strategy <\/strong>of the <strong>European Green Deal:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduce the effects of climate change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fight forest fires.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eliminate food insecurity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid disease outbreaks, protecting fauna and fighting against the illegal trade of wild species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With these ideas in mind, Europe is committed to <strong>restoring its biodiversity before 2030<\/strong>. To this end, <strong>protected areas will also be expanded<\/strong>, both on land and at sea. What is more, degraded ecosystems will be recovered and funding for these actions will increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Policy_areas_of_the_EU_Green_Deal\"><\/span>Policy areas of the EU Green Deal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a central part of the <strong>European Green Deal<\/strong>, strategies and initiatives are deployed that involve institutions, companies and citizens. These policies will mainly affect industry, construction and agriculture. The main strategies are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Climate_change_adaptation_strategy\"><\/span>Climate change adaptation strategy.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>All EU states will have to work together to collect and share data on climate change. Also, they must build more resilient societies in the face of the problems generated by the impact of global warming. That goes through adopting nature-based solutions and protecting ecosystems. Moreover, this strategy will have to be integrated into the budgetary policy of the Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Farm_to_Fork_Strategy\"><\/span>Farm to Fork Strategy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It is about ensuring the production of adequate affordable and nutritious food for all members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other strategies that the states of the Union must endorse are the promotion of the industrial fabric or the <strong>circular economy<\/strong>, as well as the development of a new forestry strategy and the search for a clean and affordable energy supply. Finally, a <strong>just transition plan <\/strong>will guarantee financial and technical support for the regions most affected by these changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Green_Deal_Initiatives\"><\/span>Green Deal<em> <\/em>Initiatives<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Within this set of changes, far-reaching initiatives begin to appear. The most important are legislative in nature and form part of the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/es\/policies\/green-deal\/#:~:text=%C2%BFQu%C3%A9%20es%20el%20Pacto%20Verde,clim%C3%A1tica%20de%20aqu%C3%AD%20a%202050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">&#8216;Objective 55&#8217;<\/a>. The <strong>promoting of renewable energies <\/strong>are among the policies that stand out. To achieve that momentum, the directive on renewable energy sources that is now in force will be reviewed. With this revision, Europe must strive to make 40 percent of the electricity consumed by 2030 <strong>renewable<\/strong>. Furthermore, <strong>energy efficiency <\/strong>regulations will be implemented .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other highlight will be the <strong>emissions legislation for cars and vans<\/strong>. Thus, passenger cars must reduce their emissions by 55 percent by 2030. For their part, <strong>vans <\/strong>must reduce their emissions by half. Additionally, the construction and sale of <strong>\u00abzero emission\u00bb <\/strong>cars should be considerably encouraged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an accompaniment to the requirements for the automotive industry, it is planned to promote the building of infrastructure for <strong>alternative fuels<\/strong>. These greener fuels should also reach the <strong>aviation and sea transport sectors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another key point will be the so-called <strong>effort sharing regulation<\/strong>. This regulation proposes to divide the reductions among several sectors: transport, construction, agriculture and waste treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another noteworthy proposal is the change in regulations to <strong>improve land use and forestry. <\/strong>Agriculture is intended to be a fundamental bastion in the fight against emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Social Climate Fund <\/strong>is also one of the most important proposals, which aims to support citizens and companies in their adjustment to these objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the economic section, a review of <strong>energy taxation is proposed<\/strong> and the current <strong>emission rights trading system will be reviewed<\/strong>. In relation to this market, the EU also looks beyond its borders with the <strong>Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, <\/strong>with this system forcing European companies to buy <strong>emission certificates <\/strong>for their foreign activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"European_Taxonomy_and_Green_Deal\"><\/span>European Taxonomy and Green Deal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, these initiatives, strategies and legal changes affect companies. Their plans, budgets, reports and balance sheets must always take into account the fight against climate change. To highlight what they do in this regard, the European Union has published the so-called <strong>EU taxonomy<\/strong>. This is a <strong>regulation <\/strong>that indicates how to publish and <a href=\"https:\/\/aplanet.org\/resources\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-eu-taxonomy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disseminate the non-financial information <\/a>of companies. It sets out how corporate environmental plans should be published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the <strong>European Green Deal <\/strong>represents a transformation that will affect all elements of society. For example, companies will prioritise <a href=\"https:\/\/aplanet.org\/resources\/sustainable-finance-an-overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainable investments <\/a>to meet the demands of a civilisation that is increasingly aware of its social and <strong>environmental impact <\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sooner companies have the <strong>green deal <\/strong>on their agenda and plans, the sooner they will fulfil their part of the commitment.
